It's every importer's first question: when does my cargo arrive? The short answer for Europe: 17 to 26 days of ocean transit depending on the port of departure, and a matter of days by air. But the vessel's transit is only part of the total time — here is the full breakdown so you can actually plan.

In this guide

  1. Ocean transit times by port
  2. What about air freight?
  3. The stages that add days
  4. Total door-to-door time

Ocean transit times by port

Estimated transit times on regular ocean service from the main European hub ports to Costa Rica:

Port of departureCountryEstimated transit
ValenciaSpain17–22 days
RotterdamNetherlands18–24 days
AntwerpBelgium18–25 days
Le HavreFrance19–25 days
HamburgGermany20–26 days

Times vary by carrier, season and whether the service is direct or with transshipment. If your supplier isn't near one of these ports, no problem: the cargo travels overland to the most convenient hub. We explain it in import from anywhere in Europe via hub ports.

What about air freight?

Air cargo from Europe normally takes 2 to 6 days airport to airport, depending on the airline, connections and space availability. It's the option for urgent shipments, high-value goods or perishables — at a considerably higher cost per kilo. To decide between the two: ocean vs. air freight.

The stages that add days

The classic mistake is counting only the vessel's transit. The real timeline includes:

  • Production or order preparation: 100% up to your supplier — confirm it in writing.
  • Inland transport in Europe (1–4 days): from the supplier's warehouse to the hub port, depending on the country of origin.
  • Consolidation and documentation cut-off (2–7 days): in LCL, cargo waits for the consolidated container's closing; sailings are usually weekly.
  • Ocean transit (17–26 days): depending on the port, as shown above.
  • Discharge and customs in Costa Rica (1–5 days): nearly immediate with a pre-arrival declaration; slower with on-arrival clearance. Details in pre-arrival vs. on-arrival clearance.
  • Final delivery: inland transport to your warehouse, usually same or next day.

Total door-to-door time

As a practical rule, an ocean import from Europe takes 4 to 6 weeks door to door once the goods are ready. By air, about one week including paperwork.

These ranges are estimates for regular service: high season, port congestion or incomplete documentation can stretch them. Your best defense is planning with a buffer and having documents ready before shipment.
